Skin Rejuvenation Using Thread Lift Techniques
Many patients with skin laxity concerns such as dropping cheeks are not always excited about the idea of having plastic facelift surgery to restore firmness. Norman Joseph Pastorek, MD, PC, FACS provides a New York novathreads procedure, a more comfortable alternative for providing facial rejuvenation than traditional plastic surgery.
Unlike surgery, which involves complete removal of loose skin using a scalpel, your cosmetic surgeon will stitch up portions of loose skin using temporary sutures, ultimately lifting and tightening the skin. Aging causes decreased collagen production leading to skin volume reduction. Thread lift procedures promote collagen production by stimulating the body’s natural healing process. Increased collagen production helps strengthen skin tissues, making them resistant to gravitational pull effects that cause overstretching. Therefore, thread lift procedures help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Advantages of using thread lift instead of plastic surgery
Reduced recovery time is the most important advantage of using thread lift instead of plastic surgery. Most patients who have undergone surgical facelift procedures require assistance and monitoring for up to three days after surgery. However, thread lift recovery is relatively fast and easy.
Thread lift procedures are noninvasive and, therefore, have reduced risks compared to surgical procedures. In case of allergic reactions like irritation and infection, your cosmetic surgeon can easily remove the sutures. On the other hand, surgical procedures pose the risk of scar formation, bleeding, and severe infections.
The different types of thread lift procedures
The two thread lift techniques that have been approved by the FDA for facial tissue lifting include:
- Nova threads
- Silhouette InstaLift threads.
The difference between nova threads and silhouette instalift threads
Nova threads and silhouette instalift threads are both made from a biocompatible material known as PDO, and they both achieve skin lifting and stimulation of collagen production. Nova threads focus on improving the skin through stimulated collagen production, whereas silhouette instalift threads focus more on eliminating loose skin, thus providing a lifted appearance.
The threads used in both procedures are designed differently.
- Nova threads can be smooth or barbed. Smooth nova threads are ideal for collagen production, and barbed nova threads gather the skin providing a lifted skin appearance.
- Silhouette instalift threads usually contain sutures that are interspersed with cones. The cones are adapted to gathering more skin tissue than barbed nova threads, thus producing dramatic skin tissue lifting in the cheeks and jowls.
What to expect during thread lift procedures
Both nova threads and silhouette instalift threads procedures take about 30 to 45 minutes. Your cosmetic surgeon will first numb the target area using local anesthesia. A thin cannula is then used to insert the threads under the skin, depending on your desired results.
Results following a thread lift procedure
You should start noticing results immediately after the procedure. However, the full effects will be observed after 4-6 weeks. You should expect some pain, swelling, and bruising at the point of treatment. Your doctor will recommend specific topical creams to help relieve any discomfort during recovery. Sometimes patients report asymmetrical irregularity in the treated skin tissue area. Do not be concerned when this happens as the irregularity usually goes away after a couple of weeks.
