Recover from Sleepless Nights
Your bed is your sanctuary, it should not be soiled by unwanted objects such as laptops, mobile phones or television.
If you have a room of your own, do not allow any electronic devices. Do not even put Fabulous next to you. There should not be a phone or computer around you in the room.
It needs to be blank of any electronic device.
Have you ever entered a Japanese room where you felt that the only thing you could do is drink tea, look at the garden, or read a book?
It’s a feeling of peace and calm that will rejuvenate you. Knowing that you cannot connect to the Internet will replace your desire to check your emails or social networks, with other feelings: calm and tranquillity. You tell your body that it’s time to relax.
Electronic devices will remind you of a busy day. They act as a trigger. All social networks are now built in such a way that you cannot resist checking them every 5 minutes.
Put an electronic device next to your bed is opening the door to temptation.
Imagine waking up at night and your phone next to you. What would be your first thought? You would catch your phone, especially if you are waiting for an important message. You could not resist checking if anyone thought of you. It’s in our nature.
Too late, you have already disturbed your sleep. One study showed that 4 of these short interruptions can wreak havoc on a quiet night’s sleep.
We will now try to replace these interruptions with Sphere rules for sleeping.
Sphere rules for Sleeping
Without further ado, here they are, and as I told you, do not compromise on them. You do it for yourself:
- You are not allowed to check your laptop or phone in bed. If the need arises, go check them on a couch, but not in the bed where you sleep.
- No electronic devices of any type in or near your bed.
- Kindles are accepted. IPads are not. IPods are allowed, iPhones are not. Anything that might tempt you to go on the Internet is not allowed.
If you have a partner, try to get them accepted. For example, you can decide three days without a device during the week, as a first step: Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.
If you live in a studio or 1-room apartment, you can adapt the rule like this: No electronic devices near your bed, and no use of electronic devices while you are in or on the bed.
If you are in the habit of checking your phone in bed, designate another place for it. Check your phone on the couch, then go to your sacred bed only for sleeping.
What we are doing here is putting in place strict rules that allow no compromise. Many studies have shown that the most successful approach for people who want to quit smoking was to stop overnight: no day off, no nicotine replacement, no excuses allowed. The decision to stop should not allow any form of compromise, and even if sometimes they failed, they restart again with the same approach “zero compromise”.
If you say to yourself, “I’m just going to check my phone on my bed this time,” you’ve already fallen into the trap, and defeated that superb detox habit you’ve built.
Let’s go back to the formula of success:
Now, in the wake of the lesson learned last week: the formula for success.
During this challenge, use a success formula that will help you remember the rules of Sphere to sleep. Here is an example to help you:
“I’m going to keep my bed empty of any electronic device. I’m going to bed only to read a book and sleep. I will not fall asleep until midnight. ”
This will help you build a solid routine for sleeping at the same time each night.
Self-discipline is a muscle, and it can only be developed when we take care of the basics. If you have not slept enough, then you will be more sensitive to temptation and less likely to resist it.
Do you remember the last time you had not slept well? You quickly found yourself in this mode “no matter”, where everything was equal to you. This is what we call apathy: the lack of interest, enthusiasm or attention for the important things in your life.
Now, Fabulous Traveler, here’s this week’s plan: Your bed will become a sanctuary that cannot be approached by any electronic device.
The plan of the week:
We have a unique action for the week as well as a goal for you.
The unique action:
You will have a good night’s sleep in the next few weeks, and for that we need to apply Sphere’s sleep rules.
Think of a formula of success that you can repeat yourself each morning, and that will help you apply these rules:
- You are not allowed to check your laptop or phone in bed. If the need arises, go check them on a couch, but not in the bed where you sleep.
- No electronic devices of any type in or near your bed.
- Kindles are accepted. IPads are not. IPods are allowed, iPhones are not. Anything that might tempt you to go on the Internet is not allowed.
Here is an example of a successful formula: “I will keep my bed empty of any electronic device. I’m going to bed only to read a book and sleep. I will not fall asleep until midnight. “
