There are so many products on the market, it can often be overwhelming just knowing where to begin. There are so many things to think about, like nappies, baby clothes, bassinets, bottles, toys, sterilisers, bib – the list goes on.
You can take comfort in the fact that you’re not the first one to go through this – millions of people have gone before you and their knowledge can help you choose your newborn baby essentials.

Nappies
When it comes to nappies, there are two ways to go, disposable nappies and cloth nappies. If you go the disposable nappy route, you’ll need 2 boxes of the newborn baby sizes, a nappy pail and disposable wipes. For cloth nappies get about 24 with 5 nappy covers and about 3 snappy fasteners. You’ll also need 24 washcloths for wiping and a nappy wet bag.
Organic coconut oil is safe to use on your baby and it’s great for clearing up nappy rash.
Newborn Clothes
Don’t buy too many newborn clothes as your baby will grow out of them so quickly. Limit clothes and blankets to the following:
- 2 large blankets,
- 8 to 12 receiving blankets for swaddling or use them for burp cloths or bibs,
- 6 to 8 mix of short and long-sleeves onesies,
- 6 to 8 one-piece sleepers (get about half with snap buttons and half with zips so you can see which ones you like),
- 2 pairs of scratch mittens so that your baby won’t scratch him/herself,
- 2 pairs of stretchy pants,
- keep his/her head warm with a newborn hat or two,
- hoodie jackets will keep out the cold,
- 4 pairs of socks to keep those teeny tiny feet warm
Don’t forget two pairs of special dress-up outfits to show the baby off to friends and family, however, people may gift you these too so don’t go too crazy buying these. But it’s hard to resist the cuteness when your pregnancy hormones are firing!
The laundry detergent you use should be scent and dye free to protect their new, beautiful, baby soft skin.
Breast Or Bottle?
How you feed your baby is your decision. If you choose to breastfeed, stock up on breast pads, a breast pump, a nursing pillow and milk storage containers. For bottle feeding, you’ll need 6 to 8 small bottles of 120ml capacity and 6 bigger baby bottles of 240ml capacity and a bottle brush and sterilising unit for cleaning.
Bath Time And Sleepy Time
Bath time is a very special bonding time between baby and parent. Do it like a pro with a hooded towel for drying, a plastic infant tub, baby wash and a few washcloths. When choosing a crib, choose one that fits your lifestyle. You’ll need a mattress, 2 mattress covers and 2 fitted sheets. For the bassinet, you’ll need 2 fitted sheets as well. Swaddling your baby in a swaddle blanket, makes him/her feel safe. We suggest 2 swaddle blankets or 2 sleep bags. They will make your baby feel nice and cosy as he/she drifts off to dreamland.
Healthy Baby
To cut your baby’s nails, use an emery board as it is easier than using scissors, or simply wait until the baby is asleep and use your teeth to gently bite off the nail. This might seem weird, but many mums swear by this method. Buy a good ear thermometer for when you need to take baby’s temperature.
Other Gear
When driving your newborn from the hospital, you’ll need an infant car seat. Make sure the car seat you buy meets the regulated safety rules. You’ll also need a stroller and a baby sling when you’re out and about.
And Finally, Love
One of the most important things you can do for your baby is to love on him/her. Hold your baby close and look at their tiny toes and tiny hands. Be present and experience this beautiful time because it really is over so soon. And remember – you can do this!
