How to Rock Barely-there Makeup

The latest fall makeup trend is the “nude” face, but it’s not entirely nude; rather, it focuses on using just enough makeup to allow your natural beauty to shine through without spending hours in the mirror.

If you’re curious to try this latest look, follow the handy tips in this guide.

Preparation

In order to get away without wearing much makeup, you want to prepare your skin and make sure it’s in tip-top shape before baring your nearly nude face to the world. Of course, saving problem skin takes time, so you may need to create a few shortcuts until you have that to-die-for complexion you’ve always dreamed of!

First and foremost, make sure to cleanse your face with a gentle wash that’s appropriate for your skin type. Pat dry with a towel, and reach for a moisturizer to help combat dry or flaky skin.

In lieu of your regular moisturizer, consider switching to a tinted moisturizer to help even out skin tone and get you started on the path to barely there makeup.

Step 1: Conceal

Just because you’re rockin’ a nude face doesn’t mean you need to show your imperfections to the world! Use concealer to disguise under eye circles, blemishes, or redness so you have a flawless canvass to work with. To highlight your skin, choose a concealer with light diffusing particles and sweep over the bridge of your nose, forehead, and cheekbones for an instant pick-me-up.

I recommend skipping foundation for this look, but if you must have a bit more coverage, look for a foundation that offers the appearance of a matte finish but is actually transparent to let the natural beauty of your skin shine through.

Step 2: Eyes

Skip the black and swipe just one coat of brown mascara onto your lashes to help create fuller fringe without looking overdone. Apply an eye highlighter (Smashbox has a good one to try) to help open up your eyes and look wide awake, refreshed, and gorgeous.

Step 3: Blush

For the barely-there look, you need to find a shade of blush that will emulate the color your cheeks are naturally when you blush. To do this, check your face in a mirror after you’ve come in from the cold or have just exercised. Not only will this help you determine your natural blush color, but you’ll also see where you blush naturally, which will help a lot when it comes time to apply color to your face.

Step 4: Lips

For lips, think tinted — tinted gloss, that is! Swipe on a moisturizing lip balm first, then choose a tinted gloss that emulates the natural color of your lips. Try one of several shades from TheBalm lip gloss collection. Not only will your lips be naturally beautiful, but they are strawberry banana scented and include SPF! How’s that for a bonus?

It’s surprisingly not as difficult as you might think to rock barely-there makeup. Even if you don’t have perfect skin, you can fake it with tinted moisturizers or light reflecting foundations that help enhance your skin and make it glow from within.

With these helpful tips, you can wear the latest makeup trend!
