The majority of people today suffer from seasonal allergies, with varying symptoms and conditions that flare up during the spring and summer seasons especially. A few useful tips can help you avoid and even prevent the development of allergies, or the irritation that results from it. Many of us have allergies without knowing it, or are not sure what causes it. If you find a pattern in your symptoms, especially those such as itchy eyes and nasal congestion, use these tips to help you avoid seasonal allergies.

1) Start from the inside, out – many people begin with external factors, when the best way to prevent just about anything is to begin internally. Give your body a fighting chance, and provide it with what it needs to prevent or address the symptoms of allergies. Here are a few things you can do: increase the fish intake in your diet, as these provide you with essential fatty acids that are key in protecting yourself from allergies. You can also add more flaxseed oil to your diet, as this also includes the fatty acids you will need. Vitamins are also important, particularly Vitamin C. There’s a reason why Vitamin C is known to fight off colds, it helps strengthen your immune city and prevent the development of allergies. There is also evidence that this particular vitamin lowers the histamine levels in the blood.

2) Clean house – ridding your house of dust and mold magnets can help you avoid common allergy symptoms. Many people are allergic to dust, but things such as carpet and drapes can also hold other allergy inducing culprits. Put your “Spring Cleaning” into motion, and clean your house of any possible irritants that may collect dust. You should also wash your bed linen, and especially your pillows, with hot water to remove any possible allergens; keep in mind you should not leave your laundry outside to dry, as it is more likely to collect pollen and dander. While cleaning, be sure you wear a mask to avoid inhaling these allergens.

3) Get the right tools – there are a few electronics that can provide you with relief from possible allergies. Having an air conditioner, or even an air purifier, can help significantly. Using these appliances, even at night as you sleep, can help prevent allergies from developing. For those living in a particular humid climate, a dehumidifier is your best friend. This tool helps prevent common allergens such as dust mites and mold from forming, particularly in the hot, humid, summer months.

4) Stay alert – be sure to monitor the pollen and mold counts, and stay indoors when they are high. Particularly in Spring, allergies related to pollen flare up considerably. Stay inside with the windows shut, and avoid any outdoor activities, particularly yard work such as raking leaves or mowing the lawn.

5) Take precautions – know what you are allergic to, and look at product labels carefully to be sure you won’t have a reaction. Allergy tests are common, and can help you better understand what causes your symptoms, and how you can best avoid them.
