Dandruff: Can it Cause Hair Loss?

dandruff

Itchy scalp caused by dandruff feels uncomfortable and embarrassing. It’s hard to tell the root of this condition. Although you can find different anti-dandruff products in the market, treating dandruff can still be a challenge because symptoms may return later.

In some cases, people with dandruff experience hair loss. But is dandruff the culprit?

The Link Between Dandruff and Hair Loss

Dandruff is not a direct cause of hair loss. Since dandruff makes your scalp itchy, however, it leads to scratching, which can injure hair follicles. The damage caused by repeated or aggressive scratching can lead to bleeding, scabbing, and temporary hair loss. Your hair will eventually grow back once the scratching has stopped.

Hair loss occurs when the hair follicle is damaged and replaced by scar tissue. It can also happen even without itching. Hereditary hair loss or male or female pattern baldness is a common cause of hair loss for men and women.

Dandruff, meanwhile, develops due to several factors, such as not shampooing enough, irritated skin, dry skin, and sensitivity to hair care products. Controlling dandruff is essential to help stop hair loss.

Treating Dandruff and Improving Hair Growth

Treatments for dandruff are available over the counter, such as shampoo, conditioner, and therapy oils. They focus on slowing down the reproduction of skin cells or fight the yeast production that might be causing dandruff.

Certain ingredients help fight dandruff. Look for these ingredients when buying hair care products:

  • Tea-tree oil – it is often used as anti-fungal, antiseptic, and antibiotic. Many people claim this ingredient helps them reduce dandruff. Tea tree causes allergic reactions, though, so use it with caution.
  • Salicylic acids – they help scalp remove skin cells without slowing down their reproduction.

Use anti-dandruff products according to the directions written on the bottle. Some products are more effective when you leave them on for a few minutes, but some should be rinsed off immediately. You may alternate anti-dandruff shampoo and regular shampoo to make it more effective.

Preventing Dandruff-Related hair Loss

Eliminating itch helps prevent hair loss caused by dandruff. This protects your hair follicles against damage because you wouldn’t have the urge to scratch your scalp. Get a diagnosis to understand the cause of your itchy scalp and dandruff.

Excessive hair washing is one cause of dandruff, but it can also be due to certain skin problems, including:

  • Dry skin – this causes tiny flakes; it doesn’t show inflammation or redness.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis – it causes red and scaly rash.
  • Malassezia – a fungus found on the scalp of most people, which can cause irritation and increase the growth of skin cells.
  • Contact dermatitis – this occurs due to your sensitivity to certain ingredients in hair care products.

Proper hydration is also essential to maintain moisture on your scalp, especially when using medicated shampoos as they can dry your scalp when used regularly. Always use a conditioner to keep your hair moisturized.

Hair loss and dandruff are frustrating and uncomfortable. Understanding the primary cause of these problems helps you find the right solution, so you can restore your strong and beautiful hair.
