Are canned goods bad for your health?

For years, we believed that it’s healthy to avoid eating canned goods. However, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle, eating canned goods provide more benefits than we thought.  In fact, the infamous food can improve our intake of fruits and vegetables, which is good for our health.

Base on the findings of the researchers from Michigan State University, canned foods are nutritious, affordable and safe to eat. They also added that because of its low-cost, people of different geography and income level can buy it and enjoy its benefits.

For the study, “Nutrition and Cost Comparisons of Select Canned, Frozen and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, ” the team analysed an approximately 40 nutrition data and scientific journal studies, which aimed to compare the cost and health benefits of canned goods and frozen foods. The team discovered three things,

Canned goods and frozen foods offer the same nutrition. However, canned goods sometimes offer more.

They found out that canned goods and vegetables both offer the same level of nutrition. However, there are times that canned goods contain more nutrients than frozen vegetable. For example, canned tomatoes are loaded with more lycopene and B vitamins than a regular frozen tomato. Lycopene can help reduce the risk of cancer. The researchers also said the canning of the vegetables such as beans can increase the fiber that it contains. Hence, it becomes more soluble and good for the body.

Canned goods give you more savings

Choosing canned goods over frozen foods can reduce your expenses for your groceries. Canned vegetables are worth half of the price of frozen vegetables and 20 % lower than fresh vegetables. All the three types offer the same nutritional value nevertheless.

Canned fruits and vegetables are more delicious, well preserved and safe to consume than the frozen version.

According to research, the high-heat canning process used in preserving canned vegetables and fruits is one of the safest and most effective ways of preventing the growth of microorganism, which may cause food-borne illnesses. Many Americans are affected by food-borne illnesses every year. Therefore, the safety benefit of canned goods is an important thing to know because it can benefit many people worldwide.

The lead researcher Steven Miller, PhD, concluded the study by saying, “Canned fruits and vegetables provide high-quality nutrition to Americans regardless of income level and geography,”

“By increasing accessibility to key nutrients many Americans need, canned foods are a year-round solution to help families prepare healthier, balanced meals.” He added.
