A quick weight-loss diet based on …Grapefruit!

Yellow, pink, white or ruby… They all have tangy-sweet flavor and are very juicy. They are the grapefruits, the stars of the Grapefruit Diet or the Hollywood Diet. There are many versions of this quick weight-loss diet, based on the belief that grapefruits block enzymes involved in fat and carbohydrate storage, and speed up the way our bodies burn fat, resulting in weight loss.


Grapefruit diet

If you think to follow this diet, here’s what the Grapefruit Diet Plan includes:

BREAKFAST

  • 1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Slices Bacon

LUNCH

  • 1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
  • Meat
  • Salad (any kind of dressing)

DINNER

  • 1/2 Grapefruit or 4 oz. Grapefruit Juice (unsweetened)
  • Meat
  • Vegetables

EVENING SNACK

1 glass tomato juice or 1 glass Skim milk

You must repeat this Grapefruit Diet Plan each day, for 12 days at least, if you want to lose 10 pounds. As you will see, the meal plan is low in carbohydrates and restricted to 800-1000 calories per day.

Grapefruit diet tips:

  • Eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice during each meal.
  • You must drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day (64 ounces total).
  • You cannot eliminate any item from the diet.
  • Limit coffee intake to 1 cup per meal.
  • Don’t eat between meals.
  • Butter can be added to your vegetables and you can fry using butter.
  • No desserts, breads, white vegetables, or sweet potatoes are allowed on this diet.
  • The vegetables allowed during this diet are: red onions, green onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and peas.
  • Stay on the diet for 12 days then stop for 2 days. Repeat as needed.

Disadvantages of Grapefruit Diet:

  • The Grapefruit Diet is very restrictive, so it may be quite difficult for some people.
  • The diet is based a very low-calorie eating plan, so dieters are under-nourished.
  • Since is low on protein levels, it can cause dizziness, fatigue, headaches.
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with medicines. The grapefruit inhibits an enzyme in the intestines that’s responsible for the natural breakdown and absorption of many medications. When the action of this enzyme is blocked, blood levels of these medications increase and this can lead to potentially toxic side effects. From this point of view, women should know that grapefruit juice interacts with the birth control pills. Some other medicines that can be inhibited by grapefruit are:  immunosuppressants, statins, HIV protease inhibitors, antihistamines, antiarrhythmics sedatives, sleep medications, and benzodiazepine tranquilizers, drugs given for male impotence, anti-migraine drugs and others.
