Some people are under the mistaken belief that simply converting to a vegan diet will cause them to lose weight. Although it is true that vegans are slimmer, healthier and have more energy, newbie vegans often make the wrong food choices which can actually slow down weight loss.
The biggest mistake that is made is eating too many processed vegan foods. Soy hot dogs, soy burgers, non-dairy cheeses and ice cream are often high in fat and will slow down your weight loss. Also beware of vegan breads and other processed grain foods.
Although it doesn’t hurt to occasionally indulge in these foods, they should not be the main part of your diet. You should also not be adding any oils to your food (including olive oil).
Raw nuts can be included – a handful of raw almonds or walnuts every day is the perfect amount.
To lose weight eating a vegan diet, you need to eat mostly fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and whole grains. These foods are low in fat with no cholesterol, and are rich in fiber and beneficial nutrients. When you make these foods the centerpiece of your diet, you can eat as much of them as you want; you won’t feel hungry and the fat will begin to melt off of your body.
One common misconception is that vegans don’t get enough protein. This is simply not true. Plant proteins alone provide more than enough essential and non-essential amino acids. Almost all vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds contain protein. Plant protein is also much healthier for you than animal protein.
Below is an outline of the foods that you should eat every day – this vegan weight loss plan is very simple and will help you quickly achieve a slimmer and healthier body.
Eat as many of the following foods as you want – the more the better – you don’t want to ever let yourself be hungry – eat until you are full. Don’t be afraid to try new fruits or vegetables – variety is the spice of life.
Fruits
Raw Vegetables
Beans
Lentils
You can also eat unlimited amounts of cooked green vegetables, mushrooms and eggplant.
Starchy non-green vegetables (squash, potatoes) should be limited to one serving per day until you reach your ideal weight and then you can increase the amount.
Minimize whole grain consumption (pasta, bread, crackers, oatmeal and other grains) until you have reached your ideal weight – then you can add more into your daily diet.
Eat two tablespoons of ground flax seed every day. This will provide you with extra fiber and beneficial Omega 3. Most doctors that promote a vegan diet also recommend taking a B-12 supplement.
You may have one handful of raw nuts or two tablespoons of nut butter (with no added oil or sugar) per day. Nuts are healthy but they contain a lot of fat – when you reach your ideal weight you can add more back into your diet.
My favorite vegan weight loss meal is a Green Smoothie. If you have never had one, you are in for a real treat. I almost always have one for breakfast and often have another for lunch or for a snack.
A green smoothie is a fruit and vegetable drink made with your choice of fruits and any green leafy vegetable (spinach, kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce). Don’t worry – you don’t taste the greens at all – all you taste is the fruit. Here is one of my favorite recipes.
In a blender, add a large handful of baby spinach leaves and one cup of water. Blend until you have a green liquid. Add two bananas and one cup of frozen strawberries. Blend until smooth.
This smoothie is not only delicious but it is extremely nutritious.
