Starchy foods (carbs)
Starchy foods are best source of energy as they are fulfilling and have very less calories. You can eat carbs in the form of whole foods like oats, sweet potatoes, maize, bread and corns. You can fill your plate with these in your daily meals. Eat a healthy meal after every 3-4 hours as your baby requires food consistently to develop and grow. Make sure you choose whole food items and avoid processed items.
Fruit and veggies
Eat a lot of fruits and veggies as these will provide you the essential amounts of vitamins, fiber and minerals that your body needs. Fiber helps greatly in avoiding digestive issues like constipation. Have a mixed platter of fruits and veggies. Make sure they are fresh. Avoid frozen and canned products. It is crucial to avoid undercooked or unwashed vegetables as bacterial infections can create complexities in pregnancy and can make you sick.
Protein
What are the best food choices (full of protein) for you during pregnancy? Well, fish, poultry, beans, pulses, eggs and nuts are all good for your diet. Don’t eat fish that is high in mercury. Select lean meat and make sure it’s cooked in light oil. Remove the skin of poultry before using it. Have fish at least 2-3 times per week as its great for the mental health of your baby. Fish has omega 3 fatty acids which are great for brain growth and development.
Dairy
Dairy is also very beneficial for a healthy diet during pregnancy. Dairy items like cheese, milk and yogurt are great sources of calcium which is very much needed during pregnancy period. Try not to take those dairy items which are too rich in fats. Some of the cheese items should not be taken. Make sure to have non-processed fresh dairy items.
Avoid food which has high sugar, salt and fat
The foods which are high in fat can be butter, heavy salad dressing, cream, cakes, chocolates, cookies, pastries, cokes and frizzy drinks. These are all unhealthy if taken in larger amounts. Sugar contains the most calories than the other food items. It will cause you to gain weight faster than anything else you eat. Extra weight that women carry during pregnancy can create health complexities for them. For example, when you eat a lot of saturated fat, it increases the cholesterol level in the blood. Eating too much sugar and fat can also disturb the blood sugar levels. Make sure to eat foods which are poly saturated like nut butters, avocados etc.
